What Is an Air Intake?

An air intake system replaces or upgrades the factory airbox to optimize airflow into the engine. Instead of the stock air filter housing, a higher-performance system is installed that channels more air with less restriction. There are two main types.

When replacing the air filter (also generally referred to as a filter mat), the original air filter is simply replaced with a high-performance sports air filter. The intake pipe and airbox remain in place. This is the easiest solution to install and typically does not require any special certification for road use.

A cold air intake system, on the other hand, replaces the entire intake assembly with a sport induction kit. A long intake pipe made of aluminum or carbon fiber routes the air filter to an area with particularly cool outside air, such as behind the front bumper or in the wheel arch. Since cooler air is denser and contains more oxygen per volume, more combustion energy is available – resulting in a direct increase in power output.
